Are People Roadblocks In Your Career?

I’ve worked in small, medium, and large organizations in my career.

The common thread is that every organization had people, and every person has a view on life…and career.

If we’re honest, we tend to look after ourselves first, don’t we?

Often at the expense of others.

There were many people I worked with over the years that helped me and were an absolute pleasure to work with. In fact, I’d say 99% of my co-workers were great people.

But I also had co-workers that had a personal agenda, which they would carry out at great cost to others around them.

Those people are sometimes hard to spot early in your career, it takes a few second degree burns, so to speak, to learn how to recognize them.

One of the easiest type to spot are incompetent people rising the ranks of the organization. If they don’t have the skills, they got there for other reasons – be wary of those people.

Generally speaking, incompetence breeds incompetence. If you’re skilled and looking to climb the ranks, but the ranks include one or more incompetent people along the way, you may wait a while!

I used to think of those people as roadblocks, but I don’t anymore.

I now look at those people as opportunities to grow.

Maybe I learn patience.

Maybe I learn new communication skills.

Maybe I use the circumstance to motivate me to move somewhere else.

You have control over your career.

Growth starts by having the right attitude about it, which takes practice.

How do you need to grow?

I am a husband, father, grandfather, business owner, farmer, and deep thinker. I love helping people, having deep conversations, and being around great people.
